Making Resolutions That Stick: Drawing Strength from Purpose🌟

goodbye 24, hello 25

As we step into 2025, we at Purity Health Menopause and Wellbeing Centre want to express our deepest gratitude to the incredible women who trusted us in 2024. Your strength, stories, and commitment to growth inspire us every day. Thank you for being part of our community.

The New Year is a time for reflection, renewal, and resolutions. While 2024 brought challenges and victories, we look to 2025 with hope and determination for brighter days ahead.

Making Resolutions That Stick: Drawing Strength from Purpose

As we set our New Year’s resolutions, it’s important to recognise that lasting change comes from more than just determination. For many, the key to staying motivated is grounding ourselves in a sense of purpose. Personally, I find strength in the belief that I am wonderfully made and that my life has a unique purpose to fulfil.

When we understand that we are part of something greater and that our actions align with meaningful goals, we can approach resolutions with a deeper sense of responsibility and motivation. Whether your resolution is to improve your health, manage menopause with greater ease, or embrace personal growth, grounding yourself in the belief that your life has value and potential can inspire powerful transformation.

Sticking to Resolutions: Applying the 7 Steps with Purpose

The principles behind Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)’s 12-step program can provide a practical guide to sticking to New Year’s resolutions. Here are 7 key steps to help you stay on track:

  1. Admit You Want Change

Reflect honestly on the areas in your life where you want to improve. Recognise that the desire for change is the first step toward reaching your full potential.

I also believe in understanding the "why of the change." Ask yourself:

    • Why do I want to change?

    • For example, if your goal is to lose weight, ask: Why?

      • To look better. Why?

      • To feel better. Why?

When we identify our true "why," we lock onto our target. This clarity sustains us, even when we feel like giving up.

As the saying goes, “Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” Challenges will arise, but they aren’t permanent—they are opportunities to elevate us to a higher level.

There’s no growth without hardship. Look at nature:

    • A seed is buried deep in the soil, where it must break apart and push its tiny shoot upward to grow.

    • Young shrubs face environmental adversity, but that struggle strengthens them into towering trees.

Even scientists learned this the hard way during the Biosphere Project. In a perfect dome, trees grew without wind or external challenges. The result? Weak trees that broke easily. It was adversity—wind, resistance, and the environment—that trees needed to develop resilience and strength.

  2. Replace self-doubt with confidence. Tell yourself, “I have what it takes to create positive change in my life.”

Visualise success and focus on the steps that will get you there. Science shows that visualising success can be more powerful in shaping your brain’s pathways (neuroplasticity) than actual practice.

This doesn’t mean you skip practice! Instead, combine visualisation with action. Together, they form a winning strategy that reinforces your belief in your potential—every single time!

  3. Commit to the Process Write down a specific, actionable plan that aligns with your goals. For instance:

    • “I will prioritise my menopause health by focusing on balanced nutrition and regular movement.”

    • “I will cut out sugar, practice intermittent fasting, and avoid eating late at night to improve my energy levels.”

Clarity and commitment are essential to staying consistent and achieving your desired results

  4. Self-Reflect Regularly Check in with yourself weekly. Evaluate your progress and ask:

    • “What am I doing well, and where can I improve?”

    • Adjust your plan as needed without being overly critical. Adjust your plan as needed, but be kind to yourself. Self-reflection isn’t about harsh criticism—it’s about learning and growing.

  5. Share Your Goals Share your resolutions with a trusted friend, colleague, or accountability group. Having someone to cheer you on and keep you accountable can make all the difference. Everyone needs a cheerleader! Find someone who loves, encourages, and believes in you—even when you face tough days. Surround yourself with positive support to fuel your motivation and confidence.

  6. Accept Help Recognise that you don’t have to go through this journey alone. It’s okay to seek support when you need it. Help can come from various sources:

    • Friends and Family: They can provide encouragement and understanding.

    • Specialists or Coaches: Consulting professionals, such as a health coach or a menopause specialist, can offer expert guidance.

    • Tools and Resources: Use apps, books, or online communities to stay on track.

Accepting help doesn’t mean weakness—it shows your strength and commitment to achieving your goals.

  7. Celebrate Progress Acknowledge and celebrate every milestone, no matter how small. Progress is progress, and every step forward deserves recognition.

Here’s how you can celebrate in ways that align with your goals:

    • Non-Food Rewards: Treat yourself to a relaxing day, new fitness gear, or something you’ve been wanting.

    • Personal Affirmations: Take a moment to reflect and say, “I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished.”

    • Share with Others: Let your cheerleaders know about your progress—it’ll inspire them and keep you motivated.

Celebrating progress reinforces positive behaviour and keeps you excited about your journey.
