Inflammaging

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

Infammaging refers to the concept of chronic inflammation playing a role in aging and age-related diseases. The term is a combination of "inflammation" and "aging." Inflammation is a normal immune response that helps the body fight off infections and heal injuries. However, chronic or persistent inflammation can have negative effects on health.
In the context of aging, it is believed that chronic low-grade inflammation can contribute to the aging process and the development of age-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and certain cancers. This chronic inflammation can be triggered by various factors, including oxidative stress, metabolic dysfunction, and the accumulation of damaged cells.

Inflammation can produce harmful molecules called inflammatory cytokines, which can damage tissues and organs over time. It can also disrupt the normal functioning of cells and contribute to the breakdown of cellular processes.
Several lifestyle factors can influence the level of chronic inflammation in the body. These include poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, and certain chronic diseases.

Conversely, adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep can help reduce chronic inflammation.
While inflammation is a natural process, excessive or prolonged inflammation can have detrimental effects on health and accelerate the aging process. Therefore, strategies aimed at reducing chronic inflammation may have the potential to promote healthy aging and prevent age-related diseases.
